Thalassemia is one of the most common genetic disorders worldwide, affecting future generations. Vietnam is one of the countries with a high prevalence of affected and carrier individuals. The estimated carrier rate is around 2-4% in the Kinh ethnic group and can reach 20-44% in other ethnic groups. This disease with autosomal recessive inherited pattern is caused by mutations in the globin chain-encoding gene. The main symptoms of the disease include anemia and iron overload.
Why should couples do Thalassemia screening?
In many cases, healthy individuals carrying the mutated gene show no clinical symptoms. Therefore, the likelihood of carriers meeting and marrying in the community leads to many couples being at risk of having children with the disease without knowing it.
How can one know if they carry the Thalassemia gene?
Although Thalassemia is a dangerous disease, it can be completely prevented in future generations through screening tests. Thus, Thalassemia testing is necessary and should be done by couples before deciding to have children. In the case of a couple both carrying the Thalassemia gene, it is essential to consult with a specialist before planning pregnancy.
Thalassemia testing is an important screening step, helping couples understand their genetic risk and ensuring the health of their child. Couples should undergo testing early to protect future generations and build a healthy family.
