Two pregnancy losses at 19 weeks due to hydrops fetalis, two unsuccessful embryo transfers and years of living with the fear of genetic disease. For Ms. Nguyen Thi Thuy and Mr. Cao Duc Chung, their journey to parenthood was not simply about becoming pregnant. More than anything, they longed to welcome a healthy baby into the world.

The Same Milestone, Twice Marked by Loss

Married in 2018, Ms. Nguyen Thi Thuy, born in 1992, and Mr. Cao Duc Chung, born in 1990, from Thach Thanh, Thanh Hoa, shared the same simple wish as many young couples: to have a baby and make their family complete.

But the pregnancies that followed became painful memories they could never forget.

During her first pregnancy, Ms. Thuy experienced a miscarriage at around six weeks. In her next pregnancy, when she reached 19 weeks, doctors discovered that the fetus had hydrops fetalis, and the family had to make the heartbreaking decision to terminate the pregnancy.

After experiencing repeated losses, the couple decided to undergo more comprehensive testing to identify the underlying cause. The results showed that both of them were carriers of the gene associated with Thalassemia, an inherited blood disorder.

From that moment, their wish changed.

It was no longer simply about becoming pregnant or having a child. More than anything, they longed to give birth to a baby who would not have to face the genetic condition carried by both parents.

The couple pooled their savings and traveled to southern Vietnam to undergo IVF combined with genetic testing of their embryos. After treatment, they had two Day 5 embryos. However, both embryo transfer attempts were unsuccessful. As treatment costs continued to rise, their journey had to be put on hold.

Still unable to let go of hope, they tried to conceive naturally once more.

Once again, the pregnancy reached 19 weeks.

And once again, hydrops fetalis was diagnosed.

The words “hydrops fetalis” became a haunting reminder for Ms. Thuy’s family. The same pregnancy milestone and the same devastating loss repeated themselves, transforming their journey from simply overcoming infertility into a search for the opportunity to give birth to a healthy child.

Four Embryos Reopen a Journey That Once Had to Stop

In 2024, Ms. Thuy and Mr. Chung learned about the Golden Week – Nurturing Happiness program at the Andrology and Fertility Hospital of Hanoi.

After multiple treatment attempts and pregnancy losses, the couple decided to submit an application, hoping to find another opportunity to continue their journey. They were subsequently selected to receive financial support for embryo genetic testing.

The support helped ease some of the financial burden. More importantly, it gave the family the motivation to begin again the journey they had once been forced to leave unfinished.

Following examinations, IVF treatment and embryo genetic testing at the Andrology and Fertility Hospital of Hanoi, the couple obtained four embryos suitable for transfer.

It was the result they had been waiting for after years of uncertainty.

However, their first embryo transfer was still unsuccessful.

After so many disappointments, Mr. Chung and Ms. Thuy decided to keep going.

In early 2025, their next embryo transfer brought joyful news: Ms. Thuy was pregnant.

This time, the pregnancy was embraced with both immense happiness and deep anxiety. Every passing week became a milestone. As the pregnancy approached 19 weeks, the very point in pregnancy that had twice been associated with loss, the couple’s anxiety grew stronger.

Every time the doctor told them that the baby was developing well, the family could breathe a little easier.

Then, 19 weeks passed.

For the first time in years, the milestone that had once haunted them was finally behind them.

A Baby’s First Cry Brings an End to Years of Fear and Uncertainty

On November 12, 2025, baby Cao Duc Khai Dang was born healthy, filling the delivery room with his first cry.

For Mr. Chung and Ms. Thuy, it was more than the moment their baby entered the world. It marked the end of a journey that had lasted many years, through pregnancy losses, unsuccessful IVF cycles and the constant fear of genetic disease.

“When the doctor told me that our baby was healthy, I burst into tears. After all the pregnancies that did not reach the end and all those years of anxiety over genetic disease, that was what we had longed for the most,” Ms. Thuy recalled.

From a family that had lost two babies at the same 19-week milestone, they could finally hold their child in their arms.

For them, the greatest happiness was not simply being able to call themselves parents.

It was seeing their baby come into the world healthy after a journey that had taken so many years to reach this day.
