ICSI (Intra-Cytoplasmic Sperm Injection)

For the first time in 1959, Chang succeeded in performing artificial insemination between rabbit’s egg and sperm in test tube environment. Since then, scientists have been constantly researching new methods for the treatment of infertility in humans IVF and ICSI are the techniques to increase fertilization rates in sterile treatment that have been reported successfully in the world since 1978 and 1992 so far more than one million babies have come from these techniques above.

ICSI (Intra-Cytoplasmic Sperm Injection) – is an in vitro fertilization (IVF) procedure in which a single sperm cell is injected directly into the cytoplasm of an egg- a technique that brings 60-85% chances of success. The difference between classic IVF and ICSI is ,in terms of insemination, ICSI needs one only sperm cell per oocyte, meanwhile IVF needs between 50 and 100 thousands, and the sperm which had been selected must be the best in morphologically as well as mobility

Since its inception, ICSI has provided great hope and opportunity for infertile couples whose causes of infertility are sperm deficiency, sperm antibody or egg deficiency ,egg and sperm can not be combined even if the husband has normal semen that IVF technique does not produce results .Recent studies show that there is no difference in embryo quality as well as postpartum pregnancy rates between assisted reproductive with and without ISCI. Today, ICSI accounts for a high proportion of assisted reproductive cycles in centers around the world, and is gradually replacing IVF.

A study conducted in five European countries in 5-year-olds showed that infants born from IVF/ICSI technique had similar weight and height indexes as normal infants. with no differences in medical conditions as well as language expression, their IQ,…. Which were reported at the annual meeting of the European Society of Endocrinology and Reproductive Sciences (ESHRE) in July 2003.

In-vitro fertilization began in 1997, and in 1998, the first three IVF babies ,in 1999 there is one baby was born from ICSI technology and until now 3,388 babies were born from these techniques at Tu Du hospital, of which most cycles were supported by ICSI.
